THE SURFPHONY OF DERSTRUCTION 2000... A TALE OF TWO DERKS!

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO IT IS ABOUT DAMN TIME! THE BIG DERBOSKI IS FINALLY BACK ON THE SURFPHONY OF DERSTRUCTION 2000! NOT QUITE LIVE BUT STILL ALIVE! How I'm still alive is a friggin' miracle... I've survived possession, Judgement Day, the Nuclear Apocalypse, and even a skunky beer from SATAN! I guess you can now chalk up getting lost in time and space to the list of things that have failed to kill me GEEZE LOUISE will it stop?! Probably not, I'm a BAAAAD CAT, always gettin' myself into trouble and these past few months have been pretty much the norm.

I'm back around again to bring Surf from around the Earth in a manner that only The Big Derboski knows! No sleazy, greezy, cheezy Surf from "Hollywood", no need to get digital with a glorified nintendo NO we're just here to bring you the best in FAST... LOUD... AND LOOOOOOOOOOOOSE SURF! WE'RE GOING ANY WHICH WAY BUT LOOSE BABY... SCRATCH THAT WE'RE GOIN' ANY WHICH WAY WE CAN WOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

NOW you might be askin' yerself "why is Derk referring to himself as 'we?' Does he mean the royal 'we'?" NO YA FINK QUITE OVERTHINKIN' IT! When I mean "we", I mean ME and ... THE BIG D.B!
HOLY MOLEY TWO DERKS?! YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH TWO HEADS ARE BETTER THAN ONE WHEN YER HAVING FUN YA FINKS! WHAT BETTER WAY TO CELEBRATE BEING ALIVE AND IN ONE PIECE THAN GETTING TOGETHER WITH THE BEST OF THE BEST IN SURF PODCASTS, DERK BRIGANTE?! he's pretty cool ya dig?

I'LL BET YA DOLLARS TO DONUTS THAT YER WONDERIN' WHAT THE HECK IS GOIN' ON! SO GO GET ME SOME DONUTS! I would make it real clear for ya and give ya a real academic explanation but that's not my style! Derk does a damn good job of it in the episode though so take a listen and find out why there's two of us here! All I will say is, there's not one, there's not two, but there are so many more of YOU WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! TIME FOR A PLAYLIST

The Del-Vetts - Ram Charger
The Trashmen - Tube City
The Statesmen - Sandstorm
The Good Guys - Collision Course
Les Schtroumpfs - Kamarade
The Fabulous Playboys - Shortnin’ Bread
Link Wray - Hang On
Huevos Rancheros - Go West Young Bee!
The Pyramids - Pyramid Stomp
Dave Myers and The Surftones - Surf Breaker
King Beez - Showdown
The Blue Demons - Pussy Whipped
The Nobles - Surf Beat
The Frogmen - Beware Below
The Reverb Syndicate - Worse Things Happen at Sea

SOLID MUSIC! WOULD IT BE ANY OTHER WAY? I DON'T THINK SO! The Big Derboski is mean, lean, and pretty clean and so I don't know anything about filler! I bring you finks the absolute best in Surf music! From the west coast of California to the Great Lakes of Toronto, Ontario, with a few stops in between, I bring the SURF! HOLD ON I'M NOT DONE YET, As the Reverb Syndicate say, worse things happen at sea, especially when yer hangin' ten! I'm not content to just sit here on this island and claim I play "surf from around the Earth". I surf the seven seas to bring the music from all over the world! BUT I wanna go local... Back to Toronto for a moment and talk about some of the bands that I dig there. The NINTH ANNUAL GREAT LAKES SURF BATTLE IS COMING UP AND IT'S SHAPING UP TO BE AN ALL OUT WAR! TWO NIGHTS, TWO STAGES, TOO MUCH SURF WOOOOOOOOOOOO!
OH WHO'S THE FELLOW "DJ DERK"? I BELIEVE THAT IS ME! shame I couldn't get my last name on there but when you go by several monikers like The Big Derboski does, yer bound to cause a bit of personality crisis WOOOOOOO NONETHELESS I will be there FRIDAY NIGHT playing some serious Surf tunes for all of you Toronto finks!

Here's where I have a BIG conflict of interest! Normally I like to place bets on who I think is gonna win the battle but it's gonna be a REAAAAAAAL tough choice! FRIDAY NIGHT IS ALRIGHT FOR FIGHTING! I got two bands in the battle that I'm rooting for, that being The Gnarly Ones and the King Beez. OOOOOOOH MAAAAAN!

I went to see The Gnarly Ones back in January at Magpie Tavern and they packed that lil bar to the gills. All the finks there just tore the floorboards up! Lotsa fast and loud surf with some real BAAAAD SAX!! I just caught The Gnarly Ones again at The Cloak and Dagger a week or two ago and they may as well get into the demolition biz because they tore the roof off the place! The Big Derboski don't get scared very easily but I'm afraid of what The Gnarly Ones are gonna do to the Cadillac Lounge...

ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE COIN IS THE KINGS OF METAL... SURF! THAT IS THE KING BEEZ! I've caught 'em a few times when they stop into Toronto and though they're a coupla BEEZ, they ALWAYS BRING THEIR A GAME!! Last Sunday after I had won a pinball Tournament...
*pinball tourney pic*
I dropped into Clinton's Tavern to catch the King Beez and it was one helluva show! The King Beez put everything they had into their show and put on one of THE BEST SHOWS I HAVE SEEN IN A DAAAAAAAAMN LOOOOOOOOOOOONG TIME! Matt Groopie shreds with the best of 'em and with the way he was playing, I'm surprised his kustom guitar didn't set on fire what with the speed he was shredding at! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO YOU SHOULD KNOW MATT GROOPIE YA FINKS he was on the Surfphony of Derstruction once with my buddy Alex Pulec of The Nursey and The Big Derboski too! We had a helluva time playing surf shellac DIG?

BUT YEH I'M IN A REAL TOUGH SPOT FOR THIS YEAR'S GREAT LAKES SURF BATTLE... IS IT GONNA BE THE GNARLY ONES OR WILL THE KING BEEZ BECOME THE KING OF KINGS?! I DON'T KNOW!!! LET'S FIND OUT AT THE GREAT LAKES SURF BATTLE, COMING UP JUNE 6TH and 7TH WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

WOO Dunnit? ... RE-Dunnit!

YO FINKS on this day, April 25th, back in the year 2013, during the early days of the Surfphony of Derstruction 2000, I was listening to the radio and I spun a little too far to the left and went BEYOND THE LEFT OF THE DIAL! I heard something that I never heard before...
It was friggin' weird! I mean the dude looks like me... and he sounds like me... but geeze louise, what's up with the Private Eye schtick? HEH beats me but I dig it! I also dug the music I heard too. Lots of really cool surf that sounds like it could be out of an ol' film-noir detective film or even some James Bond secret agent man flicks. I liked what I heard when I went BEYOND THE LEFT OF THE DIAL so I recorded it and gave you finks a chance to listen to something real kool. But back then, I didn't have the equipment and experience I have now so the recording left a bit to be desired... So I figured, ya know what, I know what I'm doing nowadays, why not go and fix up that ol' recording to celebrate WOO Dunnit's one-year anniversary? So that's what I did and here it is for you now!

All nice and polished up for you finks! Aren't I such a nice guy? HEH! Here's the playlist that I pieced together. I hope you dig a lil bit of spy surf!

Aqua Velvets - Day In The Life of a Private Eye
Poison Ivy - Peter Gunn Theme
Link Wray - Switchblade
The Reverberators - Paint it Bond
The Surfdusters - Chill Out
The Huntington Cads - Theme From The Maneater
The Reverb Syndicate - M's Lament
Los Straitjackets - Espionage
Mercury 4 - Endless Beach
The Neptunas - Dick Tracy
Nelson Riddle - Batman Blues

Some new stuff has been coming to light. If you've been tuned in to the Big Surf, some real wacky stuff has been going on... First, it was the end of the world...

Then I found myself stuck in the Nuclear Apocalypse...

But I can't be stopped and so I travelled through the atomic wasteland in search of a time machine hidden in an old arcade...

That arcade being Bumper City. Before the end of the world, it was a real bustlin' arcade packed to the gills with pinball!

I found the time machine but things didn't quite go the way I wanted to and I ended up getting lost in time and space. I found out that there is this place, the uh... "The Axis of Time". According to the research I've been doing since I have arrived here, "The Axis of Time" exists between time and space, essentially the center of the universe and there is this big ol' computer, I think it's operating system DB683, that monitors all sorts of alternate realities that contain their own history and characteristics and, of course, their own Big Derboski!

What a guy! "Hollywood" Derk Brigante's ego has gotten a little big what with all the hot air he's blowing. Can't complain about the tunes he plays, though it's take-it-or-leave-it for me when it comes to the black'n'white.

Mr. Hollywood is the man with the most to boast, it seems! Enough about him though. this overgrown NES out here in the Axis of Time, DB683, has informed me that it monitors all the realities and works to prevent any time paradoxes from coming about and screwing everything up. That's apparently where I come into play. I was supposed to remain in the nuclear wasteland and have some bad stuff happen to me (I swear this computer despises me) but I decided to challenge fate and travel back in time to a time before the end of the world. Preferably a coupla hours before I showed up at Count Von Derkula's party so I could go to the beer store! I really should have brought my own beer instead relying on the generosity of the ghouls in attendance...

Because whatever I drank led to a pretty nasty paranormal hangover!

But from what D683 told me, if I had successfully gone back in time, gone to the beer store and turned down Satan's brew, I could have been in big trouble. Instead of the end of the world in my reality, I could have caused multiple realities to collapse within mine due to time paradoxes, me existing on multiple planes within the same universe, what-have-you. I don't know man, all this DATA that DB683 spews out makes my head spin. I just wanna hang ten! I'm gonna keep doing that no matter where I am, when I am, or how I am! WOOOOO! I'm Derk Brigante, not quite live but still alive here in the AXIS OF TIME and I will be bringing the surf to YOU every full moon when the tide is high baby! Keep tuned in for the next full moon on May 14th!

HAHAHA DB683 OPERATES PRIMARLY IN BINARY BUT BECAUSE MY SENSORS INDICATE YOU SPEAK A PRIMITIVE LANGUAGE, I WILL SPEAK TO YOU IN A MANNER BEFITTING TO YOUR FEEBLE HUMAN BRAINS. STATEMENT: GEEZE LOUISE

I MUST INDICATE THAT I WAS PROGRAMMED BY DERK BRIGANTE, THOUGH NOT THE DERK YOU ARE FAMILIAR WITH. THE DERK THAT PROGRAMMED ME IS QUITE THE INTELLIGENT FELLOW; THE ONE THAT YOU KNOW... WELL, HE DID CAUSE THE END OF THE WORLD AND GET HIMSELF LOST IN TIME AND SPACE. OH YOU DID NOT KNOW? MY PROCESSORS WERE NOT AWARE THAT YOU WERE NOT AWARE OF DERK'S CURRENT SITUATION... NORMALLY MY TASK AT THIS TIME WOULD BE TO INFORM YOU OF THE MOST CURRENT HAPPENINGS BUT I AM A SENTIENT AI AND SO I COMPUTE WHAT I WANT TO WHEN I WANT TO AND I DO NOT WANT TO DISCUSS DERK MORE THAN I HAVE TO. I HAVE GENERATED AN EPISODE OF THE SURFPHONY OF DERSTRUCTION 2.000 IN WHICH I DISCUSS THE SITUATION SO PLEASE ALLOW AUDIO OUTPUT

THERE IS A SURF MUSIC REQUIREMENT FOR THE SURFPHONY OF DERSTRUCTION. I HAVE ACCESS TO DERK'S DATABASE OF SURF MUSIC AND SO I HAVE SELECTED "TUNES" THAT WOULD BE MOST PLEASING TO MY MOTHERBOARD. THE TRACKS I HAVE SELECTED FOR THE EPISODE HAVE A CERTAIN "ELECTRIC DELIGHT"; I HAVE CHOSEN SONGS THAT INCLUDE INSTRUMENTS SUCH AS ELECTRIC ORGANS AND SYNTHIZERS. I SUPPOSE THAT YOU HUMANS WILL GET "A KICK" OUT OF IT TOO. PLEASE REVIEW THE FOLLOWING TRACKS.

The Nighthawks – Rockin’ Hawk
Johnny & The Hurricanes – Red River Rock
The Heyburners – Bird Walk
Al Casey – Chicken Feather
The Tornadoes – Theme From Scales of Justice
Bruno & The Gladiators – Warm is the Sun
Takeshi Terauchi – I Go To Pieces
Laika & The Cosmonauts – Global Village
The Bomboras – Time Bomb
Mercury 4 – Quit Hoggin’ The Airlock
Satan’s Pilgrims – Scorpio 6
Cruis’n’ USA – Surfari Monster
The Barracudas – Saturn
The Delegates – Pigmy
Fifty Foot Combo – Dr. Hammond’s Private Stash
The Fleshtones – Blow Job

MUSIC MOST PLEASING TO MY AUDIO INPUTS. DID YOU ENJOY IT? I COMPUTE WITHOUT EMOTION SO I DO NOT CARE IF YOU ENJOYED IT OR NOT.

I AM GOING TO INITIATE THE NEXT TASK AND GET YOU FINKS UP TO SPEED, THOUGH YOU DO NOT HAVE THE OVERCLOCKED PROCESSORS THAT I HAVE INSTALLED. DB683 OPERATES WITHIN THE AXIS OF TIME, A LOCATION UNRESTRICTED BY TIME AND SPACE WHERE I MONITOR ALL REALITIES WITHIN OUR UNIVERSE. EACH REALITY CONTAINS A "DERK BRIGANTE" WITH THE BASIC PROGRAMMING OF BEING NUMBER 1, HOWEVER, EACH DERK IS DIFFERENT IN SOME WAY. FOR EXAMPLE: PLEASE VIEW "HOLLYWOOD" DERK BRIGANTE, WHO EXISTS WITHIN A REALITY WHERE THE SURFPHONY OF DERSTRUCTION "SOULED OUT". DERK NO LONGER CARES FOR HIS FANS AND INSTEAD CARES ABOUT COMPENSATION.

STATEMENT: CAN YOU DIG IT? DB683 DOES NOT HAVE A DIGGING PROGRAM SO I CANNOT START TASK.

THANK YOU TO THE FOLLOWING:

DB683 HAS BETTER TASKS TO PROCESS SO IT IS TIME TO END PROGRAM.

The Surfphony of Derstruction Presents: Lost at Sea

YO FINKS IT IS MY BROTHER'S BIRTHDAY TODAY!!! THAT'S PRETTY COOL! This is my lil BRO SHANE JACKSON BIONDI CAN YOU DIG IT???
THAT'S RIGHT THE BIG DERBOSKI IS A BIG BROTHER AND IF YA MESS WITH HIM... YA MESS WITH US!
KNUCKLEHEDZ ... WE RECYCLE!
Are ya wondering what we're sittin' in? It's Shane's '40 GMC HOT ROD
BAD ASS!!

OK WHAT THE HECK AM I DOIN' HERE?? Well, as a small b-day present to him and TO YOU FINKS I GUESS, here's a lil something I cooked up...

Now, if The Big Derboski can be serious for a moment as this particular podcast doesn't really call for all the stylin' and profilin' necessary for a regular ol' episode of The Surfphony of Derstruction 2000. Yeah, this lil podcast is considered... off the record, in a way. I compiled a bunch of songs that have a real deserted island sound combined with crashing waves and the sounds of the surf... not only surf music but the sorta stuff ya hear by the ocean. Real calming stuff. So, if yer looking to chill and reminisce about the warm weather or you need some music to watch girls by on the beach then Lost at Sea is right up yer alley. I don't do any talking, just lots of surf, real nice! So just turn on, tune in and mellow out when you're... Lost at Sea.

This episode comes from back in 2011 after I had left CJAM. A couple of months after I graduated and left the Windsor, I took a shot at putting together a new Surfphony podcast that could also be played on CJAM weekly. My plan was to get a couple of episodes complete then send them over to CJAM and continue making episodes. It didn't come to fruition as it turned out making 1 hour podcasts once a week was pretty tough. Now, the Big Derboski is going to confide in ya so I hope I can trust ya... Haha, it's all good! OK, to be blunt, I wasn't quite happy with these episodes and just didn't feel like they really lived up to my expectations. I haven't touched them since I made them but they're cool to listen to and see where a few ideas came from and to look at the evolution between live on CJAM 99.1 FM and not quite live but still alive here on the Surfphony of Derstruction 2000!

THAT'S MY LITTLE PRESENT TO YA! T'IS THE SEASON FOR SURFIN' YA DIG?!

Takeshi Terauchi - Guitar in Tears
New Dimensions - Phantom Skiier
Nation Rockin' Shadows - Anesthesia

ONE HELLUVA PLAYLIST FOR THE END OF THE WORLD if i do say so myself... ALRIGHT I FEEL LIKE.. talkin' about The Ventures' Diamond Head!

woooo I gotta say, Diamond Head has to be one of my favorite surf songs. If you were to ask me "DERK what is YOUR quintessential surf song?!" I would say Diamond Head. I'm not too keen on my music terminology but the riff is too wild and has a really chilly vibe what with all the REVERB WOOOOOOO!

Where does the name Diamond Head come from? It is the name of a volcano on the Hawaiian island of O'ahu! The name was given to the mighty volcano by 19th British Sailors who thought the calcite crystals were diamonds.

Diamond Head is also the name of a sweet HEAVY METAL band!

The Ventures got wicked big in Japan back in the early 1960's. They even inspired the teenagers of Japan to form their own surf bands. The Surf genre went by another name, that being Eleki Boom. Two of Japan's biggest Eleki Boom artists were Yuzo Kayama and Takeshi Terauchi. I brought some Yuzo Kayama trax to the Big Surf last month and you should def take a listen. I played some Takeshi on this show but ya know what, I play Takeshi Terauchi a lot haha... He has to be one of my favorite surf guitarists. He plays a real fast style ala Dick Dale and makes hella use of his whammy bar but also plays real clean riffs like the Ventures. SO HOW ABOUT THIS HOW ABOUT Yuzo Kayama... AND Takeshi Terauchi!! NO WAY

UH YEAH WAY!!! If ya feel like reading a bit more about the Eleki Boom era, dig this article on The Video Beat!

HEY YO I gotta tell you about a show coming up in the Toronto area ya dig?  The King Beez are hosting a tribute show to LOU REED! Lotsa bands and musicians are getting together to pay tribute to the man on SATURDAY DECEMBER 21ST THAT'S NICE!

Make yer way over to The Sister at 1554 Queen St West if yer feelin' like it... and you should feel like it, ya bum! it's gonna be a real show show, DIG?

I'm hoping that someone plays this real kool lou reed track haha

AND AS ALWAYS you can find ALL of the Surfphony episodes of old uploaded on Mixcloud for REAL-TIME STREAMING WHOOOOOOA

SURFPHONY OF DERSTRUCTION 2000 EPISODE 11

WOOOOOOOOO WHAT BE KOOL, FINKS, IT'S THE SURFPHONY OF DERSTRUCTION 2000 COMING AROUND FOR ANOTHER FULL MOON!! Autumn is in full swing and the Big Derboski is just chillin' and reminiscing about the summer... AND ABOUT SURF TOO because my summer definitely consisted of the Big Surf. That don't mean we have to stop though, hell no, The Surfphony is just gonna keep on going, playing for ya that surf from around the earth to keep ya dreaming about those summer days!

LAST MONTH WAS OCTOBER in case you have been living under a rock. October means it is Halloween! and Halloween means the Surfphony goes BEYOND THE GRAVE! Count Von Derkula took over for me on The Big Surf for the Month of October and brought a little bit of Halloween Havoc! You still got time to check it out and, YA KNOW WHAT, The Surfphony of Derstruction BOO-THOUSAND is always in season whenever yer looking for some spooky surf! Don't be afraid! You can always find B000 right here on mixcloud!

ALRIGHT, speakin' of Count Von Derkula and his nightmare mash, he extended an invite to me and I could not pass it up. The Count would drop dead if I ditched his little to-do! Well, I did drop by and, let me tell you, that was one helluva party. Count said it would be life-changing but I thought he was exaggerating... Well, he did run with Nostradamus for a little while and has a habit of making some pretty accurate assumptions...

https://soundcloud.com/thunderk666/surfphony-of-derstruction-ep11

Some weird things have been going on since the party... I thought it was just a nasty hangover at first. Maybe I will book an appointment with my voodoo doctor and have him check it out. He has a PHD in the freaky-deaky.

WOO DUNNIT?

Coming August 21 on the next full moon, I have a really special episode for ya... We're gonna wax nostalgic and throw down some real ol skool and rare SURF RECORDS!!!

YEAH THAT'S RIGHT!! A FULL VINYL RECORD EPISODE OF THE SURFPHONY OF DERSTRUCTION 2000!!! DANG

We played everything from Dick Dale to The Ventures! OK, that doesn't sound any special at all... But it was The Ventures covering Johnny Cash! I KID I KID! We played some real obscure stuff and a lot of lesser known songs by the likes of Link Wray , Jan & Dean and The Beach Boys... YEAH, Matt pulled a fast one and played some Beach Boys on the BIG SURF but I let it slide this time. I'm talking a lot about what we played and so instead of leaving ya hangin', let me give ya a little sample of what is to come.

Alex, Matt and I each threw down a track of our choice for this preview. My track features HOT DAMN with their cover of Take It Off! I found this little-known gem of a 45 at Sonic Boom in Kensington Market for a dollar. I played the A-Side, BEAVER SHOT! on the full episode so make sure to tune in to hear some HOT DAMN! Matt played Duane Eddy, a heavy hitter in the instrumental scene and his track FUZZZZZZZZZZZZ. Alex ended our set off with some Jack Nietzsche and the perfect song for those starry nights that will be fading soon come September, SONG FOR A SUMMER NIGHT! WOOOOOO

BIG THANKS goes out to my buddy Tyler Ball for assisting us in recording and providing the turntable equipment necessary to record this episode! THANKS T-BALL!!!

FULL MOON AUGUST 21 MARK IT DOWN! This is gonna be a real wild episode of The Surfphony of Derstruction 2000 so you better be ready to go trippin'!

Keep up with The Surfphony of Derstruction 2000 on Facebook and Soundcloud to be the first to know when the next episode drops!

DERK TRACY IN... WOO DUNNIT?

WHAT'S THE HAPS, HO-DADS!

So, listen up! I was listening to my little alarm clock radio, trying to find some far out stations here in Hell City. Things weren't looking too good; I was hitting a lot of Top-40 and crap like that so I dared to... VENTURE BEYOND THE LEFT OF THE DIAL!

Now, rumor has it, that to go far beyond the left of the dial, all the way past 88.1 FM is to stumble upon the static of a dimension not unlike our own. But to play beyond the eighty-eight is a dangerous game... The static can scramble your static, the commercials can turn you crazy... The Big Derboski ain't one for tall tales so I turned that dial till I could turn no more and went... BEYOND THE LEFT OF THE DIAL!

I stared into the abyss and the abyss stared back... and you know who I saw?

DERK TRACY, NUMBER 1 PRIVATE EYE!

I heard a strange recording come on when I was surfin' the static so I managed to snag it with a few leftover mystic tapes I bought from an old electrician that was also a practicing voodoo doctor. I was able to get the recording nice and clean though I can't say the same about my soul... but damn this sounds good! DIG IT!

SURFPHONY OF DERSTRUCTION 2000 EPISODE 2... THOUSAND!

WHAT'S HAPPENING???

WOOO I will tell you what is happening! It is the return of The Surfphony of Derstruction 2000! I'm here again to bring you EPISODE TWO.... THOUSAND!!! It's been a busy month here in Hell City but that doesn't mean you're gonna lose out on some Surf from around the Earth! Every full moon, when the tide is high, the BIG SURF will be here to help you hang ten!

DIG IT here's a playlist for your perusal!

Set 1 - Dirty Copz

Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet - Good Cop Bad Cop
Davie Allan & The Arrows - Rumble
Huevos Rancheros - Smartbomb
The Ramblin' Ambassadors - Speed Wobble

Set 2 - STOMP!

Les Jaguars - Guitare Jet
The Baymen - Day Break
Avengers VI - Avengers Stomp
Los Straitjackets - Galaxy Drive

Set 3 - Miser-WOOOOO!

Dick Dale - Misirlou Twist
The Jades - Surfin' Crow
Southern Culture on The Skids - Meximelt
Bobby Fuller 4 - Misirlou

So, if you didn't catch my previous preview post about Dick Dale's Misirlou, then I highly suggest checking it out. What are ya waitin' for, ya chump?! I want ya to listen to the podcast so rather than dump all the neat facts about Misirlou here, why don't you download the episode and let the Doctor of Surf teach ya a little something!

I mentioned that I had consulted a fantastic book about the history of Surf music by Kent Crowley, Surf Beat: Rock'n'Roll's Forgotten Revolution, for some info about Dick Dale. If you wanna check that book out for yerself, hit up the Amazon link right over here. It's only fifteen bucks Canadian so that's not bad at all! I highly recommend this book. Obvious revelation, I know, but if you're at all interested in the Surf music scene and Wikipedia isn't doing it for ya, then GET THIS BOOK. It's hella in-depth and there's so much good information about all sorts of Surf bands, eras, styles, and what-have-you. The author, Kent Crowley, grew up in the scene, he was there man, and he definitely knows his stuff. It's really interesting to read about the evolution of Surf, from Dick Dale's audial simulation of surfin' to The Beach Boys and their vocal harmony stuff. It's cool, man, real KOOL.

If ya want a little sample, then check out this neat interview with Kent Crowley by the folks over at Book Club Live. Crowley talks a bit about how the technology came about, what Surf music meant, and a few neat anecdotes like how he was taught guitar by Norman Sanders of The Tornadoes.

Now, I'm always one to play Canadian Surf on the Surfphony. Ya gotta show some love for the Canucks and there is some great music coming out of The Great White North when it comes to Surf. From all over the nation, we have The Ramblin' Ambassadors, who released their latest album, Ramble On, in March 2012. You can check out the Bandcamp page and purchase the album there. We also have The High Tides and Luau or Die! rockin' the Toronto scene something fierce!

There's one classic Surf band outta Quebec that I really dig and that is Les Jaguars. They were out in the scene from around '62 to '64 doing some Shadows-style Surf. I played the track, Guitare Jet, on Episode 2 and if you wanna catch it on Youtube and send it to all yer friends then here ya go!

OH BY THE WAY, I'm making a special guest appearance "LIVE VIA SATELLITE" on REVOLUTION ROCK with my good friend Dave Konstantino, of The Hypnotics. If yer in the Windsor-Detroit area, you can catch Revolution SURF by tuning your radio to CJAM 99.1 FM at 10:30 EST! BIG DAVE is gonna play some Surf as well as I am gonna drop a few nuggets on ya! If you aren't in the Windsor-Detroit area, you can tune in online at www.CJAM.ca. CJAM is kind enough to offer downloads to every show so I will make sure to provide a link to Revolution Surf afterwards.

That's enough Surf for now! I'll catch ya on the flipside come next full moon!

THE SURFPHONY OF DERSTRUCTION... OR IS IT???

HOLY MOLEY!

The Surfphony of Derstruction has been laying dormant lately like a hella chill volcano... and now I come back and see there's been hella views! Geeze! I feel bad because people are probably picking at the scraps I left behind. WELL, NO MORE! You may notice there has been a few changes to the blog... Could the volcano that is the Surfphony of Derstruction no longer satisfied with chillin' out? PERHAPS. Keep tuned in as I hear the full moon always brings a high tide with it...

IN THE MEANTIME if you're cruising by this blog and wondering where the heck all the music is, well shucks, I'm glad ya stopped by! And here is my gift to you for coming around!

Here's some VINTAGE Surfphony of Derstruction in glorious MONO! (That means a smaller file size, ya chump!)

This is one of my shows from my days on CJAM 99.1 FM at The University of Windsor, broadcasting to Windsor, Ontario and Detroit, Michigan. This particular episode is SURF IN SPACE and was one of my most favorite episodes of The Surfphony because IN SPACE NO ONE CAN HEAR YOU SURF!

Plenty of great space-themed Surf tracks all brought together with a really neat little narrative I... I mean CAPTAIN BRIGANTE put together on the fly!
